Tough Questions about the Bible?
The Bible is the single most read book in all of human history. So it’s not a surprise that it might have a few critics. Over the years, I’ve read thousands of essays attacking the Bible as being “unreliable.” Authors like Dan Brown (and his best-selling pseudo-history book The Davinci Code) love to perpetuate these myths. To make matters worse, most Christians don’t even know enough about the Bible to know if these allegations are true or false.
For example, there have been a lot of claims that the Bible isn’t historically reliable. Some say that it is filled with contradictions and translation problems that would fundamentally undermine its reliability. To ratchet up the pressure, these same critics claim that there are “lost books of the Bible” which were eliminated for political reasons. And that many medieval clerics have written their own theology into the texts over the centuries. But are any of these allegations true?
BLOGS ABOUT THE BIBLE:
How Reliable is the Bible? Infallible – Inerrant – or Neither!?
What is the difference between infallible versus Inerrant? Critics of the Bible make big claims about the “contradictions” of Scripture. But upon closer evaluation, simply don’t hold up to intellectually honest scrutiny. So in this blog we hit the topic from a 10,000 foot view. Are there serious transcription, translation errors and problems with historic accuracy? Click Here for More.
Did New Testament Writers know that They were Writing Infallible Scriptures?
What makes the New Testament books any different from other Christian books? Why should we cut off the New Testament list at 27? What privileges and promises did Jesus give to his 12 Apostles that make them (and their books) fundamentally different than other Christians? What books can I read that go into greater detail? AREN’T THERE ERRORS IN THE BIBLE (PART 1)
Have you ever heard of the “Lost Gospels” – Like the Gospel of Thomas? Are there missing books in the Bible? And who decided which books to include in the Bible? Was there a conspiracy to eliminate books? Were medieval clerics adding their own verses over the centuries? How many translation and transcription errors actually exist in the typical Bible? AREN’T THERE ERRORS IN THE BIBLE: What is Inerrancy? (PART 2)
How can Christians say: “the Bible is without error” (the doctrine of inerrancy) especially when the Apostles openly admitted to making mistakes? What makes the Apostles of the Bible totally different than the authors of other books? Is it true that Christ promised they would recall his teachings perfectly? I mean, did the Apostles realize that they were writing “inerrant scripture” when they wrote letters? Or, are Christians just guilty of elevating the sacredness of these texts? Where in the world did the doctrine of inerrancy actually come from? CLICK HERE TO Watch.
WHAT ABOUT THE WEIRD COMMANDS OF THE BIBLE?
If the Bible is truly for today, then what’s up with all the bizarre or harsh commands of scripture? Who decides which commands we still obey? And is it arbitrary? Many people want to get into scripture, but struggle with all of the bizarre rules of the Old Testament. So, how do these commands fit into modern faith? The truth is, modern Christians do not “pick and choose” which passages they obey. Indeed, there is a clear reason why modern Christians don’t continue carrying out the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament. In this message, Pastor Peter explains the 3 Categories of Laws, and how it affects the modern ethics of Christianity. CLICK HERE to Watch.
WHAT ABOUT THE “UNSCIENTIFIC PORTIONS” OF THE BIBLE?
Critics argue that the Bible describes the earth in ways that have been scientifically debunked. Therefore, it’s said that “the Bible is incompatible with science.” However, we all use figurative speech to describe the world (in scientifically inaccurate ways), yet we’d never see that as “not believing in science.” So, does the Bible have the same right and privilege? Ironically, the Bible has some shockingly accurate descriptions of nature – centuries before science could prove these descriptions to be accurate. But, how do we wrestle with the tensions of science and theology? Pastor Peter engages some of these interpretation debates and exposes the deeply flawed logic processes that people fall into.
